June 9th - 11th 2023

OVERVIEW

Summary

ETHPrague was the fourth event since AGD’s fourth renewal in January 2023 and was the third AGD-sponsored hackathon. This event was added to further engage the community ahead of GHO’s launch and experiment with different hackathon prizes.

AGD hosted a booth during the hackathon weekend and facilitated and judged hackathon submissions for projects building on Aave.

After seeing numerous hackathon projects building to support Aave governance in previous hackathons and the importance of governance, along with our proposal on how to utilize the OP AGD received as a part of OP Stimpack phase 0, we decided to experiment with offering explicit grants for projects building on Aave x Optimism and governance in addition to projects building on GHO.

Personnel

No one from AGD attended. Aave Co had a delegation of 6 people who were dedicated to supporting the Aave booth, including founder Stani Kulechov.

ACTIVATIONS

ETHPrague Hackathon

In total over the weekend:

  • 198 booth visitors collected the Aave @ Eth Prague POAP
  • 9 hackathon projects submitted for building on Aave & GHO
  • $10k awarded to the top 4 projects building on Aave & GHO
  • 1 workshop by DefiSpartan - ‘GHO: A flexible, decentralized stablecoin’
  • 1 Fireside Chat with Stani on ‘Stablecoins and the Future of Online Payments’

The main focus at ETHPrague was the hackathon, where AGD sponsored three prizes hackers could receive for the best projects building on Aave or integrating GHO. Out of the total 95 projects that were built during the event, 9 applied for Aave prizes and 4 prizes were awarded across three different categories: Best GHO Hack, Best use of Aave with OP and the Best Governance Hack. The winners were:

👻 Best GHO Hack

  • Use the built-in tx builder to complete on-chain actions like "Borrow USDC using 0.1 eth as collateral".

🔴 Best use of Aave with OP

🏆 Leverage ReFi

Leverage ReFi's mission is to become a new era for ReFi and stablecoins like GHO by making them powered by ecological real-world assets.

🏆 Praave

💻 Best Governance Hack

🏆 PEER UP

PEER UP revolutionizes how we connect and live. Empowering individuals to build strong local communities by sharing resources, governing together, and positively impacting neighborhoods through a common treasury of aTokens.

GOALS

The overarching goal for AGD sponsorships at all events is to proliferate the ghost. This is done through:

  • brand visibility and community engagement
  • attracting and cultivating top contributors
  • fostering innovation and supporting the development of new projects
  1. Brand visibility and community engagement - Make Aave top of mind
  • Expanding brand recognition and extending the reach of the Aave community to become the top ecosystem that contributors think of to build on.
  • This is achieved through things like:
    • Distributing Aave branded merchandise
    • Having an engaging booth presence
    • Participating in community side events
  1. Attracting and cultivating top contributors - Connect with the community
  • Attracting exceptional contributors and fostering long-term relationships to drive innovation and growth.
  • This is achieved through things like:
    • Building relationships with strong communities
    • Providing perks for Aave grantees and Aave builders
    • Hosting the signature rAAVE
  1. Fostering innovation and supporting the development of new projects - Support builders
  • Empowering and incentivizing participants to explore new ideas, drive impactful solutions, and support the development of innovative projects.
  • This is achieved through things like:
    • Offering hackathon prizes
    • Conducting developer workshops
    • Facilitating knowledge sharing

RETROSPECTIVE

ETHPrague was the final hackathon before GHO is set to launch on mainnet. It also marked a new geography and hackathon community to engage with. AGD was able to experiment with offering hackathon prizes in explicit verticals: GHO, governance and Aave on OP.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Improvements and adopted learning from previous events
    • In the leadup to the event, we could provide more visibility into hackathons prizes and guidance to hackers around key areas for building on top of the Aave Protocol and GHO
  • Actionable items for future events/hackathons
    • The OP and Governance prizes struggled to gain traction with hackers during the hackathon. In future hackathons, AGD should consider a better use for partner tokens and potentially partnering with the respective ecosystems. For Governance focused prizes, AGD needs to give a clearer picture of opportunities for what developers can build.

FOLLOW UP

In 6 months we plan to revisit this report and see if interactions have progressed to a grant application or other actions that benefit AGD or the Aave ecosystem. Key stats we will look for are:

  • Grant applications received after original interaction at ETHPrague
  • Grant applications awarded after original interaction at ETHPrague
  • Other beneficial calls or connections after original interaction at ETHPrague
  • Social media shout outs / follow ups from AGD’s presence at ETHPrague

We have a number of different events coming up and revisiting this report will be an opportunity to track improvements and recurring issues.
